Sponsored by the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and ISU Extension, the Soil Management and Land Valuation Conference is intended for farm managers, rural appraisers, real estate brokers and others interested in the land market in Iowa. This is the longest running conference at Iowa State in both research and extension, and 2021 will mark the 93rd annual meeting in this series. It is designed for anyone who has an interest in agricultural land, land management, and land valuation. The program is planned each year by the ISU Extension Economics team in the Department of Economics at Iowa State University.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this conference will be offered virtually via Zoom on Wednesday May 19th 8am-3:30pm. We are currently applying for 6 hours of real estate and appraiser continuing education credits from the Iowa Real Estate Commission and the Real Estate Appraiser Examining Board, respectively. We will also have three $50 gift card giveaway opportunities for the participants throughout the day.

This year’s program will examine several current issues in rural property management, appraisal, and sale/purchase, as well as agricultural policy. Seven current issues and their implications to soil management and land valuation will be presented by leading experts in (1) agricultural policy priorities in 2021 from leading congressional staffer and USDA official, (2) agricultural carbon credits program for farmers, (3) weather outlook and its impacts on agricultural production, (4) how coalition to support Iowa farmers are helping livestock producers, (5) agricultural market outlook, (6) the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on land and asset values, and (7) key developments in agricultural law and regulations such as the WOTUS rule.

The conference offers networking opportunities for professions who have an interest in agricultural land, land management, and land valuation. Additionally, participants have an opportunity through an online survey before the conference to “gaze into their crystal balls” and will be asked to provide their estimates of future land values in Iowa and corn and soybean prices via an online survey distributed before the conference.
